A FanFic (fanfiction) is a story you create where you take characters from another source (book, movie, TV show, etc) and put them in situations of your own design. Join us on September 17th to learn a bit more on FanFic and start your own that could possibly win a prize!

So, join us at Grinnell Library for the NEW Graphic Arts Club!!

Rules for FanFic:

A FanFic (fanfiction) is a story you create where you take characters from another source (book, movie, TV show, etc) and put them in situations of your own design.

First, think of the source you want to use characters from.

Make sure you already know the universe in which you are writing; know the facts of the character(s) world. Remember, people read FanFic because they are fans of the original work. Your FanFic should have the same general ‘feel’ of the original work, and the characters should be **IN CHARACTER**, meaning they should act like themselves, unless you plan to write a parody (spoof, making fun of).
Devise and jot down a plot and a setting, and any possible extra characters of your imagination that you might wish to add. Do not put yourself as a character or in the story in any way. A good way to create a plot is to ask yourself a what-if question. For example, it could be “What if _________ hadn’t died?”
Begin to write your story in the most descriptive, attractive and most appealing way possible.
After you are done with sections of your story or your entire story, revise and proofread it to make sure there are no spelling or grammar errors. So don’t forget to use a spell check.
Remember to keep consistent.
Rules
·        You MUST include a disclaimer at the beginning of your story. The disclaimer must state where you got your characters from and that you are not profiting from writing your story.
·        All stories must be kept at PG-13 level. Romance and intimacy are okay, but keep it clean.
·        Do not create a story just to have 2 characters become intimate. Remember to keep the characters in character.
·        According to US law, anyone, including fictional characters, under 18 are still considered children and therefore any sexual explicit material is child pornography in the eyes of the law. You cannot negate this by changing the character’s age. The character is the age that he/she/it is in the sources.
·        Keep characters from one source; do not take a few characters from one source and mix them with a different source, ex. Harry Potter and Thor.
·        If judges feel that there are any inappropriate materials or plagiarism, that submission will be disqualified.
·        Stories must be of new works; please do not use stories already submitted on FanFic sites.
·        Minimum of 2 pages (if it’s just a chapter/section) and max of 10 pages (completed story).
·        Cambria, Times New Roman, or Calibri font only, font size must be 12.
·        Single or 1.5 spacing.
·        Final draft of story is due by November 19, 2011. No late submissions will be accepted into the contest.
